I believe that sometimes the things that hold us back from living our best life as an adult are actually parts of ourselves that helped us to survive while we were growing up. Sometimes these parts try and protect us in ways that are no longer needed or helpful.
Therapy can be a place to compassionately examine and accept all parts of ourselves, while learning and practicing new ways of navigating life’s ups and downs in a more grounded and holistic way. We all have both child parts who need care and nurturing, and adult parts who are capable of giving that care and nurturing.
Having a good therapeutic relationship is the most important factor in growth and change, and I strive to create a therapy space that is based in acceptance, compassion, and non-judgment.
My approach...
My therapeutic approach is collaborative, relational, and integrative. I tailor my therapy style to the needs of each individual client and pull from feminist theory, existential theory, attachment theory, person-centered therapy, psychodynamic therapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), polyvagal theory, and internal family systems (IFS). Together we will figure out what theoretical approaches work best for you.
The messages and relationship patterns we learned in childhood often continue to impact the way we interact with the world, with others, and with ourselves in adulthood. My approach involves tuning inward, to ourselves, our bodies, and our inner wisdom. This can be especially challenging (and transforming!) for people who grew up learning to tune outward in order to stay safe.
My therapy sessions often include working to separate what beliefs and messages you want to keep from those you don’t, and separating what emotions are yours and what emotions belong to others.
Professional training & memberships...
I hold a Master of Arts in Counseling from Bastyr University and am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in Washington State, credential #MC61085166. I am a Certified Trauma Professional (CTP) and a certified CETA* (Common Elements Treatment Approach) counselor.
*A note on CETA:
CETA (Common Elements Treatment Approach) is a structured, time-limited (8-12 sessions), evidence-based therapy designed to help reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress, anxiety, and/or depression.
