Avery Whittington, Clinical Intern

Pronouns: he/him

I decided to become a therapist because I wanted to help people connect more meaningfully with themselves and the people who matter most in their lives. My personal journey as a Black, queer transman has given me some insights into how oppressive forces can shape our experiences and choices. My unique identities and life experiences naturally influence how I approach therapy.

My approach...

I view therapy as a unique opportunity to focus entirely on yourself and what you need to thrive. It is also a space to explore your choices and how you want to navigate your life.

Therapy should be a collaborative process. My aim is to establish strong, supportive connections with you and your loved ones and to accompany you on the path of healing and growth that you've courageously embarked upon. Together, we'll identify the goals that matter most to you and explore different strategies to help you work towards them. I draw from various therapeutic theories, including narrative therapy, attachment theory, and emotionally focused therapy (EFT), all with a focus on building upon your strengths.

Professional training & memberships...

I am a Master’s level student in the Couples & Family Therapy and Sex Therapy Certificate Programs at Antioch University Seattle. I am also a graduate from the Sexuality Educator Certificate Program at Antioch.

I am a member of the Queer and Trans Alliance with the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT), American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT), and the Washington Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (WAMFT). I hold a Master’s degree in Education from Seattle University and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration.
